My name is Ashlee. I am a Licensed Massage Therapist, Doula, Lactation Consultant and Ayurvedic Practitioner.
I grew up around pregnancy, childbirth, and babies. I come from a large family and spent my childhood watching and learning from my aunt who is a homebirth midwife. I have memories of playing in her office as a child. My cousin and I would take turns pretending to be pregnant, checking our PH, listening to each other’s heartbeats and using her Doppler to hear our imaginary babies' heartbeats. I’ve always had an interest in women’s health and traditional medicine, so it’s no surprise that I ended up working with families around the childbearing years.
Education & Experience
I have been a Licensed Massage Therapist since 2005. I specialize in prenatal and postpartum massage as well as Ayurvedic bodywork, but I also love to help ease pain or relieve stress with women and the LGBTQ community in other times of their lives. I am a certified prenatal massage therapist and have all the props and pillows to make massage while pregnant and postpartum safe and comfortable at any point during pregnancy, labor or postpartum. I love working with expectant families during pregnancy and in the early postpartum period. I truly believe nurturing the mother should come first in nurturing a new baby. It is important that the pregnancy, birth and early postpartum is a time when the birther is supported. Being supported in this time of transition and bringing in new life has lasting effects on mental, emotional and physical well being and the journey into parenthood.
I spent five years working and studying at The Ayurvedic Institute, where I was privileged to work in the Pancha Karma Center under world-renowned Ayurvedic physician, Dr. Vasant Lad. I was fortunate to have spent a few of those years studying with Dr. Claudia Welch author of Balance Your Hormones, Balance Your Life. My time at The Ayurvedic Institute informs the work I do today with women's health and the childbearing years. One of my favorite treatments to give (and receive!) is the warm oil Ayurvedic massage called Abhyanga. This is wonderful for anyone needing to reset or get grounded, but it is especially nurturing and restorative in the first couple months postpartum.
As a massage therapist I enjoy integrating specific deep tissue work for places that need to get unstuck or relieved of pain with more subtle relaxing therapies such as ayurveda, aromatherapy, cranial etc, to approach relaxing both the body and the mind holistically. I have worked in multiple top-rated spas in the country, have trained under exceptional teachers and have been honored to be asked to teach, train and mentor other bodyworkers and doulas in ayurvedic bodywork, spa therapies and birthwork in California, New Mexico and New England.
I am an active doula and lactation counselor and have been working with 2-4 families a month since moving back to New Mexico in 2013. I love educating women, individuals and families on their choices and helping them achieve an empowering birth they can feel good about. Evidence based Breastfeeding support and education is also a passion of mine. In our modern world we often don't see enough of it and just hope for the best. In my experience learning and planning for the early weeks of breastfeeding before the baby arrives and having enough support in the early days and weeks makes a huge impact on long term success and satisfaction. I have trained through DONA (2006) and CAPPA (2014). I was trained as Breastfeeding Educator in 2014 and followed up with a more extensive training with The Center for Children's Lactation Counselor program in 2016. I have taken childbirth education classes and trained with Birthing From Within, Pro Doula as well as multiple CAPPA faculty. I am certified in Rebozo techniques through Gena Kirby and in acupressure specific to pregnancy, birth and postpartum. I have also taken Spinning Babies workshops and classes to learn how optimal fetal positioning in pregnancy and labor can lead to a happy pregnancy and an easier birth. I am constantly updating my education with evidence based classes, research and workshops including many through Evidence Based Birth.
Fertility wellness and holistic conception planning is a new love of mine. I enjoy working with all types of families including single women and the LGBTQ community who are looking at the options in starting a family or who have struggled with fertility or may be going through fertility treatments.
I have additional training in many modalities including: western and eastern nutrition, anatomy and physiology, yoga, aromatherapy, herbs, homeopathy, fertility and am certified in infant CPR. I love working with women and the LGBTQ community whether in the childbearing years or not to help them feel their best. If I feel as though clients need more support that I do not specialize in I will refer out to those that do.
When I'm not at a birth or supporting postpartum or giving massages I enjoy traveling, learning more about women's wellness, writing and being in nature with my puppy.
